The following poem is what’s called a “quatern.” In essence, a quatern is a sixteen–line form consisting of four quatrains, each of which features a refrain which runs throughout the poem. This refrain is located in a different place in each quatrain. Specifically, the first line of stanza one, the second line of stanza two, the third line of stanza three, and the fourth line of stanza four. Typically, a quatern has eight syllables per line and does not have to follow a particular rhyming scheme (even though my poem does).
Rainbows
By Matthew White
Where rainbows dare to shine so bright
And people risk to inhale hope
I feel warmth of refracted light
As day becomes kaleidoscope.
Diminishes does wonder not
Where rainbows dare to shine so bright
And skylarks itch to share their songs—
Soliloquies to vanish night.
For here senses are tantalised
By seen and unseen fineries
Where rainbows dare to shine so bright
And beauty makes the filthy clean.
Hear wild things call—professing creed—
Setting expanse and hearts alight
As lustrous arcs their colours bleed
Where rainbows dare to shine so bright.
